TRUTHS UPON WHICH WE STAND The following is an abbreviated compilation of the truths that form the foundation for the faith and practice of Grace Baptist Church. None of these statements replace or usurp the authority of the Word of God. They are intended only to express the Biblical truths that are non-negotiable to GBC. Every Church appointed leader must be in full agreement with the truths set forth in this statement. A fuller statement of faith with which we are in agreement may be found in the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith. The order of the following statements is taken from a solid Baptist confessional statement set forth in 1858. Some of the content has been changed from the original copy as seen in Boyce’s Abstract of Systematic Theology. I. THE SCRIPTURES The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and are the only sufficient, certain and authoritative rule of all saving knowledge, faith and obedience. II. GOD There is but one God, the Maker, Preserver and Ruler of all things, having in and of himself, all perfections, and being infinite in them all; and to Him all creatures owe the highest love, reverence and obedience. III. THE TRINITY God is revealed to us as Father, Son and Holy Spirit each with distinct personal attributes, but without division of nature, essence or being. IV. PROVIDENCE God from eternity, decrees and permits all things that come to pass, and perpetually upholds, directs and governs all creatures and all events; yet so as not in any wise to be the author or approver of sin nor to destroy the moral choice and responsibility of intelligent creatures. In His ordinary providence God makes use of means, yet is free to work without, above, and against them at His pleasure. V. ELECTION Election is God’s eternal choice of some persons unto everlasting life—not because of foreseen merit in them, but of his mere mercy in Christ—in consequence of which choice they are called, justified, sanctified and glorified. VI. THE FALL OF MAN God originally created man in his own image, and free from sin; but, through the temptation of Satan, he transgressed the command of God, and fell from his original holiness and righteousness; whereby his posterity inherit a nature corrupt and wholly opposed to God and His law, are under condemnation, and as soon as they are capable of moral action, become actual transgressors. VII. THE MEDIATOR Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, is the divinely appointed mediator between God and man. Having taken upon Himself human nature, yet without sin, He perfectly fulfilled the law, suffered and died upon the cross for the salvation of those sinners the Father gave to Him. He was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended to his Father, at whose right hand He ever lives to make intercession for His people. He is the only Mediator, the Prophet, Priest and King of His people, and Sovereign of the Universe. VIII. REGENERATION Regeneration is a change of heart, wrought by the Holy Spirit, who quickens the dead in trespasses and sins, enlightening their minds spiritually and savingly to understand the Word of God, and renewing their whole nature, so that they love and practice holiness. It is a work of God’s free and special grace alone. IX. REPENTANCE Repentance is an evangelical grace, wherein a person being, by the Holy Spirit, made sensible of the manifold evil of his sin, humbles himself for it, with godly sorrow, detestation of it, and self-abhorrence, with a purpose and endeavor to walk before God so as to please Him in all things. X. FAITH Saving faith is the belief, on God’s authority, of whatsoever is revealed in His Word concerning Christ; accepting and resting upon Him alone for justification and eternal life. It is wrought in the heart by the Holy Spirit, and is accompanied by all other saving graces, and leads to a life of holiness. XI. JUSTIFICATION Justification is God’s gracious and full acquittal of sinners, who believe in Christ, from all sin, through the satisfaction that Christ has made; not for anything wrought in them or done by them; but on account of the obedience and satisfaction of Christ, they receiving and resting on Him and His righteousness by faith. XII. SANCTIFICATION God’s Word and Spirit dwelling in them also sanctify those who have been regenerated. This sanctification is progressive through the supply of Divine strength, which all saints seek to obtain, pressing after a heavenly life in cordial obedience to all Christ’s commands. XIII. PERSEVERANCE OF THE SAINTS Those whom God hath accepted in the Beloved, and sanctified by His Spirit, will never totally nor finally fall away from the state of grace, but shall certainly persevere to the end; and though they may fall, through neglect and temptation, into sin, whereby they grieve the Spirit, impair their graces and comforts, bring reproach on the Church, and temporal judgments on themselves, yet they shall be renewed again unto repentance, and be kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation. XIV. THE CHURCH A New Testament Church is a company of regenerate persons, baptized on a profession of faith in Christ; united in covenant for worship, instruction, the observance of Christian ordinances, and for such service as the gospel requires; recognizing and accepting Christ as their only Head, His Word as their only and sufficient rule of faith and practice in all matters of conscience and religion, and bishops (elders/pastors) and deacons as their only Scriptural officers. XV. BAPTISM Baptism is an ordinance of the Lord Jesus, obligatory upon every believer, wherein he is immersed in water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, as a sign of his fellowship with the death and resurrection of Christ, of remission of sins, and of his giving himself up to God, to live and walk in newness of life. It is to be administered by one properly appointed by the church. It is prerequisite to church fellowship, and to participation in the Lord’s Supper. XVI. THE LORD’S SUPPER The Lord’s Supper is an ordinance of Jesus Christ, to be administered with the elements of bread and fruit of the vine, and to be observed by his churches till the end of the world. It is in no sense a sacrifice, but is designed to commemorate his death, to confirm the faith and other graces of Christians, and to be a bond, pledge and renewal of their communion with him, and of their church fellowship. XVII. THE LORD’S DAY The Lord’s Day is the New Testament expression that identifies the day upon which Christians observe a Sabbath unto God. This day is the day blessed by God and made for His people to step aside from the ordinary labors, business, entertainment and distractions of the other six days in the week in order to devote themselves particularly to exercises of worship and spiritual devotion and to works of mercy. While there are changes in detail from the Old Testament to the New Testament, the spirit of the day remains the same; namely, to find full joy and satisfaction in the Lord of the Sabbath. XVIII. LIBERTY OF CONSCIENCE God alone is Lord of the conscience; and He hath left it free from the doctrines and commandments of men, which are in anything contrary to his word, or not contained in it. Civil magistrates being ordained of God, subjection in all lawful things commanded by them ought to be yielded by us in the Lord, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. XIX. THE RESURRECTION The bodies of men after death return to dust, but their spirits return immediately to God—the righteous to rest with him; the wicked, to be reserved under darkness to the judgment. At the last day, the bodies of all the dead, both just and unjust, will be raised. XX. THE JUDGMENT God hath appointed a day, wherein he will judge the world by Jesus Christ, when every one shall receive according to his deeds: the wicked shall go into everlasting punishment; the righteous, into everlasting life. We also believe and hold to the doctrines set forth in the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith. We recognize that both of these confessions are no more than the collective thoughts of men expressing their understanding of God's Word. Neither confession in any way supersedes the Word of God.

THERE CAN BE NO TRUE PROGRESS IN VITAL AND PRACTICAL GODLINESS WITHOUT IT! (Arthur Pink, 1886-1952) "But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers." Psalm 1:2-3 Meditation upon the Word of God is one of the most important of all the means of grace and growth in spirituality. There can be no true progress in vital and practical godliness without it! Meditation on Divine things is not optional but obligatory, for it is something which God has commanded us to attend unto. "Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful!" Joshua 1:8 Spurgeon: To get the nourishment out of a text, turn it over and over in your mind, meditate upon it, pull it to pieces word by word! Scripture meditation is the strong meat on which holy men are nourished. Oh, to be bathed in a text of Scripture, and to let it be sucked up into your very soul, until it saturates your heart! The more you read the Bible, and the more you meditate on it--the more you will be astonished with it! (Source: Grace Gems)
Revelation 20:11-15 (NASB) 11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

PRIDE CANNOT LIVE BENEATH THE CROSS (Charles Spurgeon) "He humbled Himself." Philippians 2:8 Jesus is the great teacher of 'humility of heart'. We need daily to learn of Him. See the Master taking a towel and washing His disciples feet! Follower of Christ--will you not humble yourself? See Him as the Servant of servants--and surely you cannot be proud! Is not this sentence the compendium of His biography: "He humbled Himself." Was He not on earth, always stripping off first one robe of honor and then another--until, naked, He was fastened to the cross. There He not emptied out His inmost self, pouring out His life-blood, giving up for all of us, until they laid Him penniless in a borrowed grave. How low was our dear Redeemer brought! How then can we be proud? Stand at the foot of the cross and count the scarlet drops by which you have been cleansed. See the thorny crown and His scourged shoulders still gushing with the crimson flow of blood. See His hands and feet given up to the rough iron, and His whole self mocked and scorned. See the bitterness, the pangs, and the throes of inward grief show themselves in His outward frame. Hear the chilling shriek, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me!" If you do not lie prostrate on the ground before that cross--you have never seen it! If you are not humbled in the presence of the sin-atoning Savior--you do not know Him. You were so lost that nothing could save you, but the sacrifice of God's only begotten Son. Think of that, and as Jesus stooped for you--bow yourself in humility at His feet. A realization of Christ's amazing sacrificial love has a greater tendency to humble us than even a consciousness of our own guilt. May the Lord bring us in contemplation, to Calvary. Then our position will no longer be that of pompous pride--but we shall take the humble place of one who loves much, because much has been forgiven him. Pride cannot live beneath the cross! Let us sit there and learn our lesson. Then let us rise and carry it into practice. "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." Matthew 11:29 ~ ~ ~ ~ (Source: Grace Gems)
"He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the Lord." Psalm 40:3
John 10:10 "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly."
"The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock; And exalted be the God of my salvation,". Psalm 18:46
THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD (Arthur Pink) "Our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases!" Psalm 115:3 "Whatever the LORD pleases, He does--in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps!" Psalm 135:6 The Sovereignty of God may be defined as the exercise of His supremacy. Being infinitely elevated above the highest creature, He is the Most High, Lord of Heaven and earth. Subject to none, influenced by none, He is absolutely independent. God does . . . as He pleases, only as He pleases, always as He pleases. None can thwart Him--none can hinder Him. God's sovereignty is not the sovereignty of a tyrannical Despot, but the exercised pleasure of One who is infinitely wise and good! Because God is infinitely wise, He cannot err. Because He is infinitely righteous, He will not do wrong. Here then is the preciousness of this truth. The mere fact itself that God's will is irresistible and irreversible fills me with fear--but once I realize that God wills only that which is good, my heart is made to rejoice. God's purpose cannot fail. God's plans cannot miscarry. God's will must be done. A "god" . . . whose will is resisted, whose designs are frustrated, whose purpose is checkmated, possesses no title to Deity--and so far from being a fit object of worship, merits nothing but contempt! "All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as He pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back His hand or say to Him: What have You done?" "But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, long suffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth." Psalm 86:15
A strict, close, assiduous, diligent search! (Charles Spurgeon) "Search the Scriptures." John 5:39 The word here rendered "search" signifies a strict, close, assiduous, diligent search--such as men make when they are seeking gold, or hunters when they are in earnest after game. We must not rest content with having given a superficial reading to a chapter or two; but with the candle of the Spirit, we must deliberately seek out the depth of the Word. Holy Scripture requires searching--much of it can only be learned by careful study. There is milk for babes--but also meat for strong men. The rabbis wisely say that a mountain of matter hangs upon every word of Scripture. Tertullian exclaims, "I adore the fullness of the Scriptures." No man who merely skims the book of God, can profit thereby. We must dig and search until we obtain the hidden treasure. The door of the Word only opens to the key of diligence! The Scriptures claim searching. They are the writings of God, bearing His divine stamp and sanction--who shall dare to treat them with levity? He who despises them, despises the God who wrote them! God forbid that any of us should leave our dust-covered Bibles to become swift witnesses against us in the great day of account! The Word of God will repay searching. God does not bid us sift a mountain of chaff with here and there a grain of wheat in it. The Bible is winnowed grain--we have but to open the granary door, and find it. Scripture grows upon the sincere searcher. Under the teaching of the Holy Spirit, to the searching eye--it glows with God's splendor, like a vast temple paved with wrought gold, and roofed with rubies, emeralds, and all manner of precious gems. Lastly, the Scriptures reveal Jesus, "The Scriptures point to Me!" No more powerful motive can be urged upon Bible readers than this--he who finds Jesus finds life, Heaven, all things. Happy he who, searching his Bible, discovers his Savior! "If you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God!" Proverbs 2:4-5 (Source: Grace Gems) ~ ~ ~ ~
IT IS RADICAL, REVOLUTIONARY, LASTING! (Arthur Pink) "For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring Word of God!" 1 Peter 1:23 The new birth is very much more than simply shedding a few tears due to a temporary remorse over sin. It is far more than changing our course of life, the leaving off of bad habits and the substituting of good ones. It is something different from the mere nourishing and practicing of noble ideals. It goes infinitely deeper than coming forward to take some popular evangelist by the hand, signing a pledge-card, or joining a church. The new birth is no mere turning over a new leaf--but is the inception and reception of a new life. It is no mere reformation, but a radical transformation. Regeneration consists in a radical change of heart, for a new disposition is implanted as the foundation of all holy exercises . . . the mind being renovated, the affections elevated, and the will emancipated from the bondage of sin. In short, the new birth is a miracle, the result of the supernatural operation of God. It is radical, revolutionary, lasting! "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new!" 2 Corinthians 5:17 (Source: Grace Gems) ~ ~ ~ ~
